What is dyslexia?

“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”

“From the very beginning, it was evident that Ms. Lewis was a very knowledgeable and prepared teacher. She personalized instruction for our daughter, to optimize her growth and progress”

 –Nichole W.

Our journey started when my daughter was in 1st Grade. We could not understand why she was not able to recognize look-a-like words or why she was not able to remember a word we JUST worked on 1 page earlier.   We were tired of crying and fighting every night about reading homework. First Grade - the homework was supposed to be "Easy" right?  And get harder throughout the years?  But let me tell you, the struggle was REAL!.   We went on a search to find someone that could help ease this burden? It felt like we were searching to find the non-existent pot of Gold at the end of a Rainbow. What we FINALLY found was much more valuable than a pot of Gold.  We found Imelda!!   Our daughter, now a 3rd grader, has been working with Imelda for almost 2 years. In this time, we have seen our child's reading abilities drastically improved. More importantly however, her confidence has skyrocketed!  The way she is being taught is much different than for kids without dyslexia. Imelda has provided her with "rules and tools" to help her with reading words, spelling, sentence structure...all things ELA.  Our daughter now has a "toolbox" that she can pull out when she gets stuck on a word. When we see her break down a word to code it or when we listen to her explain WHY a word is spelled a certain way is  - - it truly is incredible and makes us so proud.   Whereas homework used to bring tears to our eyes....we are no longer going to bed crying from frustration.  Thank you Imelda for having a passion in teaching her with the patience and love that you show!  We are blessed to have you in our lives.

-Michelle S.
